“Hurry up and Wait” is one of the most popular phrases used in the military. From the very beginning, you learn quickly to become very good at rushing around to do something only to then sit there at a state of attention awaiting further orders.
But the same goes in the Blogging world. If you join the Blogging Community expecting 1,000 followers overnight and the world to magically become aware of your story and your efforts, you set yourself up for disappointment. Time is your friend—it’s a forced friendship—but it pays off. You hurry up and create as much content as you can, and then you wait. And wait. And wait. And then finally, one day, you hit your first 1K, and people start to see what you’re about, and your hard work gets out there, and people grow to love you, your story, and your personal journey. And your community begins to build.
That’s why I was ecstatic to learn I was selected for The Blogger Recognition Award. Maya, of Maya’s Diary, chose
★ the Star Spangled Mama ★ as one of her Top 15 favorite blogs! And I’m so glad that, in turn, I was able to discover Maya’s Diary through this award. She majored in PR & Communications, and it’s evident writing is her passion. I just love the format of her blog and the way she presents her creativity, both visually and editorially! Visit her blog here.
I can’t say the same, though. Writing was NOT my passion when I started my blog, haha! I’ve taken a couple higher-level Writing courses in college, but had no overwhelming desire for writing, itself, per se. I love creative outlets, so I was more excited about designing the look of my blog, to be honest. To create the framework around the bunch of thoughts in my head that I wanted to get out: thoughts, and experiences, and things I had learned that maybe could help people in the same low points I’ve been in. Thoughts, and experiences, and things I’ve learned, and creative ideas on the budget we live on that maybe could help other moms in the same situation. As I have added more content over time, I’ve realized the drive behind my blog is my wanting to help others going into or through seasons I’ve already walked through. Sometimes all it takes is one word of encouragement—and maybe it will be mine. If it’s not, then okay, nothing lost, nothing gained.. but if it is, then, in my mind, my blog has served its purpose.
If I could give any advice to a new blogger, it would be to stick with it! It’s very easy in the beginning to get discouraged by numbers of followers and feeling like you need to write ten posts in one night and all that, but you have to remember you are blogging for a reason, and someone somewhere NEEDS to read what you have to say the way you need to say it. Don’t suck the fun out of it for yourself. Do what you can when you can. Stay with it. Create and evolve your space—and HAVE FUN with it. You do you, and your people out there will find you exactly when they are meant to.
I started my blog in October of 2016, and have been amazed at the incredible support found in both the Military Spouse and Mom Blogger Communities. What an amazing group of women! I feel so honored to be among them.
The following is the list of blogs I chose for The Blogger Recognition Award (in no particular order), and why.
And I’m confident you’ll love them, too.
- MELISSA | www.petitelittlesblog.blogspot.ca
The photography of Petite Littles Blog is amazing. Melissa has really captured the essence of her brand with her layout and her content; it’s the kind of blog that makes me want to look at everything and read everything all at once! A post she did called ‘Outfits and Authors,’ where she created outfits for her children inspired by books, is just an example of her awesome work!
- SARAH | www.prettysimpleideas.com
I absolutely love the look and layout of Pretty Simple Ideas. Sarah strives to bring simplicity back to this fast-pace world we live in, and she does it very well through both the design of her blog and the content presented in her posts. Her “Start Here!” page is my favorite.
- ALEXANDRA | www.thesemamamoments.com
When I read These Mama Moments, I feel like I know Alexandra and that we are sitting at the kitchen table hanging out while our kids play. She has the absolute sweetest heart and wonderful ideas, and both shine through her posts beautifully.
- AMIE | www.amiemariana.com
Amie Mariana is the most unique blog I’ve ever seen. It’s eye-catching, which draws you right on in to Amie’s mind-catching content. I especially loved her post from August 3rd about ‘ditching negativity.’
- JILLIAN | www.shelivesvintage.com
She Lives Vintage embodies the Girl Boss mentality. It’s like an empowering magazine at your fingertips, encouraging women to be both strong and beautiful. And I love the way Jillian’s voice comes through in her writing.
Scenes from Cedar Street makes me feel like I’m at home. Leah blogs motherhood, fashion, lifestyle, and design, and she does it extremely well. Scenes from Cedar Street is a blog you will look around at for awhile, I guarantee it.
- SARA | www.saralaurenlewis.com
If you don’t feel like you’ve had a giant, warm hug from a fellow Mama after visiting even so much as Sara’s WELCOME PAGE, then.. there’s something wrong with you! Haha, just kidding! Sara’s mission is ‘become a grace giving mom,’ and she embodies it so well. Isn’t a little bit of grace all we’re all looking for?
- KRISTIN | www.theblushblonde.com
The Blush Blonde is a beautiful girly-girl blog, while still bringing attention to a serious side of matters like living with chronic illness. I love Kristin’s positivity and spark for pink and pretty things, while still using her voice to encourage others having to overcome struggles every single day.
- KRYSTAL | www.mydayinlosangeles.wordpress.com
If you want to feel like you’ve visited the West Coast without having to hop on a plane, visit My Day in Los Angeles. Krystal blogs Womanhood, Motherhood, and her awesome experiences with her family. And her blog layout is amazing. This is another one you can plan on clicking around on for awhile! 🙂
- KRISTEN | www.coffeeandkissesformama.wordpress.com
One of my favorite things about Coffee and Kisses for Mama is the photography. Kristen’s blog is light and bright and just really inspiring for daily Motherhood and Mom Life, summed up in her tagline “Fueled by Coffee, Paid in Kisses.” Love it.
- AUDREY | www.lifewiththelittlepeople.com
Audrey, I hope you take this as a compliment, because it’s absolutely how I mean it:
Life with the Little People is a blog that makes me feel like I’ve stepped into the reverence of an old church. Reverence for God, as well as reverence for Motherhood. I love the ‘old church’ feel of Life with the Little People—a place where everyone is welcome to sit awhile and refresh their own soul as they raise the little ones entrusted to them.
- SUMER | www.gracegigglesandnaptime.com
Grace, Giggles, & Naptime is so bright, so fun, and so well-organized. I love Sumer’s attitude toward motherhood, and it shines through in her blog. Make sure to check out her ‘Kids’ Crafts’ under her ‘For the Littles’ section. SO, so cute.
- CRYSTAL | www.thecreativecopycat.com
Despite her name of ‘copycat,’ Crystal is as real as they come. I love how she takes ideas and makes them her own, proving how we, as a community, inspire each other’s individual creativity in memory-making for our kids. I especially love the sweet Printables she creates!
- CARLIZ | www.muditamom.com
Mudita means ‘joy on someone else’s behalf,’ and Carliz is just that. Her joy for life is completely contagious! She blogs mom life, kitchen life, and crafter life, and I absolutely love her encouraging spirit.
- KELLIE | www.abrightneighborhood.com
Even if you’re feeling good, you’ll feel even better within 5 seconds of visiting A Bright Neighborhood. I don’t even want to describe this blog to you, because I feel it won’t do Kellie justice. You need to see for yourself. And if you have girls, you’ll want to check out ‘Prayers & Promises for my Daughters.’ Kellie, thank you for continually brightening my world with your content and your incredible soul!
Congratulations to all of you! I selected each of you because of your visual designs,
inspiring stories of who you are, and your incredible content you put out.
Thank you for who you are and what you do!
I promise you are making a difference!
